Humberside Track League - 5th August
Three Scarborough Athletic Club athletes attended the final fixture of the Humberside Track League at the Costello Stadium Hull on Saturday 5 August, and competed as guests.
Veteran Mark Cawte was in the opening event, the 2000m walk, with a total of five athletes competing across the age groups. Having opened an early lead, Mark who twisted his ankle ten days earlier, was lapping 20 seconds slower than his usual pace this season and was eventually overtaken by Liam Clapham, an Under 17 from Cleethorpes. Mark finished in second place (first senior) over 2 minutes outside his best in 12 minutes 47.8 seconds, this however is a Scarborough Club Record, one which Mark is keen to demolish next season. Mark then spent the rest of the day completing in and judging throwing events. With his injury he was limited to standing throws but won them all with Hammer 22.77m, Discus 22.23m and Shot 7.57m, before competing as a guest in the Soft Hammer competition for youngsters, an event showing the basics of technique throwing a half kilo foam hammer, which Mark threw 45 metres !
Northern Indoor Champion Jonathan Sharp front ran the 800 metres for a clear win in 2 minutes 07.9 seconds, whilst James Kraft had a tight race in the 1500m Steeplechase coming second in 5 minutes 12.8 seconds, to Liam Clapham
Harrogate town centre 10K - 30th July
Five athletes from Scarborough Athletic Club competed in the annual Harrogate Town Centre 10 Kilometre road race on Sunday 30 July. The race was over a two lap circuit of mainly back streets of the town. With some steep climbs and humid weather, the event was not conducive to fast times, but SAC's Jonathan Bateman managed to finish a clear third in 34 mins 29, just behind the talented raiders, Phil Sly from Thames Hare and Hounds AC and Salford AC's Pumlami Bangani. Jonathan is currently training hard for the Robin Hood Half Marathon in five weeks time, plus the Great North Run later in the year.
Mark Colling also had a good run to finish 9th overall of the 432 finishers in 36.0, and was also the first Over 40. Richard Maw closed in for the second team spot, with a respectable 32nd in 38.40.
Husband and wife duo Dave and Avril Reading both did well competing in lower age groups, particularly 64 year old Avril who was 11th of the Over 50s in 76.15. With no over 65 Division in this race, 67 year old Dave had to settle for 48.44 and 4th Over 60 on this occasion.
Roseberry Topping Fell Race - 25th July
8 members of Scarborough Athletic Club competed in Race 7 of the 11 Race series of the Northern Runner Summer Series which was held at Roseberry Topping on the North Yorks/Cleveland borders. The race is the shortest in the series, and is just 1.5 miles long, but involves the ascent of the famous landmark with 720 feet of climb, some of which is severe and testing, both on the upward path but also the downhill. The runners can choose their route, as the only requirement is to touch the Trig Point on top of Roseberry Topping, but many opt for the most direct particularly on the descent.
The SAC athletes had a very successful race, and achieved victories in the women's race plus 4 age group divisions. The most outstanding performance was achieved by Katy Rawnsley who was once again the first woman overall, and the 26th in the race, and thus consolidated her overall lead in the series. The next woman home was Julie Clayton, 4th woman and the first Over 35. Julie was particularly able to demonstrate her downhill running skills in this race. Sue Haslam who much prefers the longer races, did more than enough to finish as the first Over 50 once again, when she finished as 6th woman overall. As the team scores were based on overall positions, SAC had to settle for 2nd team this time.
Ian Ellmore once again proved to be the fastest SAC man, finishing in 9th overall and the 1st Over 40. Jeff Winder made his experience pay when finishing 14th overall and the 1st Over 50. Another experienced fell runner, Chris Clayton who was 16th overall and the 6th Over 40, just held off a strong challenge from 15 year old Robbie Unsworth who was having a very good debut over the fells, and was the first Junior runner. He also completed the scorers for the SAC team which finished 2nd behind a very good North Yorks Moor AC team. Dave Parke provided the backup, finishing 56th overall and the 10th Over 50
Young Athletes League - 23rd July
The young athletes of Scarborough Athletic Club have gained promotion from Division 2 to Division 1 in the Northern Young Athletes League, Division 2 North East. Promotion was clinched at the final league meeting at Gateshead on Sunday 23 July, and was especially noteworthy as only 18 of the team were able to take part, mainly because of booked holidays. SAC finished the final match down in 4th, and with the same number of match points as rivals Richmond and Zetland AC, but due to a superior number of individual winning performances, Scarborough finished ahead in overall second place, and were therefore promoted.
For the third time this season, an SAC athlete was voted the 'Athlete of the Match' . This time it was Vee Jay Perry who has only recently joined the club, and this was his debut appearance. SAC Track and Field coach Sue Lawal writes;
" I first saw Vee Jay Perry, (a year 9 boy at Caedmon School), at a district school's competition at York in June. He narrowly missed the qualifying High Jump height for the English Schools finals, but it was clear that he had real potential, and simply needed help with his technique. I liaised with his P E Teacher, and eventually managed to get him down to Pickering for two Saturday coaching session prior to the competition on Sunday. Although he had very little time to adjust his technique, he jumped in textbook style on the day and achieved a Grade 1 level jump of 1.72 metres. He also went on to win the Long Jump, which is not an event he has trained for, and to round of the day, was named 'Athlete of the Match. Vee Jay's story shows what can be achieved when schools and clubs work together. Hopefully he will be able to access winter training at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield, as part of the regional training programme "
With their comparatively small number, plus a limit on the number of individual events, the emphasis for SAC was on gathering precious points. To this end, many of the team competed in events which offered the best prospect of a good result in terms of the score, even though in some cases they had little experience of the event. In addition, the hot and humid weather mitigated against personal best performances, particularly for track events. At the end of a good days competition, the SAC young athletes achieved the best possible result in gaining promotion to Division 1.

Walkington 10K and Fun Run - 21st July
10 athletes from Scarborough Athletic Club took part in the Walkington 10 Kilometre Road Race on Friday 21 July. This is a very popular annual fixture, run over an undulating course around the village of Walkington near Beverley. In spite of the hot and humid weather, 523 completed the race, with all 10 athletes from SAC finishing in the top half of the finishers.
First to cross the finish line was the fast improving Rickie Wilson who ran an efficient race, with even 5 kilometre split times, to finish 4th overall in 35 minutes and 1 second, which was 3 minutes and 24 seconds faster than his 'comeback' race at Rainton a month earlier. He was followed by Mark Colling in a splendid 9th overall and the 2nd Over 40 in 36.27. Just 11 seconds behind Mark was James Kraft in 10th overall and the first Over 18 finisher. James also set a new Under 17 Club Record and a personal best with his 36.38 finish, and also closed in for the men's team which was 2nd.
Richard Maw tried hard to close the gap between himself and James, and finished 13th overall in 36.59. The next 6 finishers for SAC all did well in their age group divisions. Neil Scruton finished the first of the Over 55s and 34th overall in 39.33, and Mick Thompson the 2nd Over 65 and 204th overall in 48.37. Mark Kendall-Lansell was 11th Over 40 and 54th overall, whilst Ted Kraft who is also getting back to race fitness after an injury, finished as 8th Over 50 and 69th overall in 41.50.
Jane Hamp got up to 5th in the Over 45 Division with a 50.27 finish, and Janet Lawrence was 4th of the Over 55s in 52.19.
Fun Run
In a Fun Run prior to the main 10K race, of just under 3 Kilometres, which was open to all ages, and attracted 196 finishers, 12 year old Daniel Maw finished a close up 4th in 9 minutes 43, and younger brother Joe Maw finished in an equally impressive 45th in 12 minutes 56.
