North Yorkshire and South Durham Cross Country League Round 3 at Whitby
A recent record number of 14 club members, which included 5 Juniors, competed in the 3rd Round of the North Yorkshire and South Durham Cross Country League at Whitby College. After lots of recent rain and snow, the course was classed as ‘heavy going’ but all concerned were delighted that the fixture was retained on a weekend that many sporting fixtures and local Parkruns were cancelled.
In the Men’s Under-17 Race, Ben Guthrie who is the current League Champion for this age group, notched up a win after pulling clear of the Race Leader around the halfway stage.
In the Senior Men’s race Harry Butterworth, who was the winner of this year’s Yorkshire Coast 10-Kilometre Race, returned to Cross-Country for the first time in the league in 6 years. After a battle with the reigning Senior Men’s Champion Gregory Jayasuriya, he hung on well to finish in 2nd Overall of a strong field that precluded some older Age Groups who had a separate race.
In the Senior Mens Race, the runner up Harry Butterworth was followed by Darryl Koekemoer 20th and 5th Over-40, Ekaitz Unanue 57th, Sheldon Kilroe 61st and Joanathan Sharp, who made a return to Cross-Country since his days as a Junior, was 66th of 111th overall.
For a second consecutive fixture, the Club’s Senior Women fielded a scoring team of 4 Rhona Marshall who was 4th Female overall and 1st Over-40, 21st and 5th Over-50 led Hester Butterworth 21st and 5th Over-50, Sue Haslam 37th and 1st Over-70, and Bridget Macedonski 51stand 4th Over-60.
In the Junior Races starting with a combined race for Under-11 Girls and Boys. Tayla Koekemoer who was the club’s Under-11 Girl representative, finished 16th of 29 and ahead of 7 Boys. Noah Kilroe and Xavier Unanue took on the Under-11 Boys in the race. Noah was 10th and Xavier 14th of 22 overall, 13-year-old Jack Marshall competed in the Under-15 Race and was 15th overall
North Yorkshire and South Durham Cross Country Cross Country League at Foxrush, Redcar
11 Club Members competed in the 2nd fixture of the North Yorkshire and South Durham Cross Country Cross Country League.
Three Generation Landmark
3 of the club members achieved a most notable landmark event, when they represented 3 generations of the same family who all competed at the same Cross-Country meeting at Redcar Sue Haslam aged 71 was joined by her daughter Rhona Marshall aged 44 and her son and Sue’s Grandson Jack Marshall aged 13.
Senior Women
Two of the generation trio competed in the Senior Women’s Race. Their presence resulted in the achievement of a complete scoring team for the first time in recent years. Rhona Marshall led the team with 5th Overall of 156 and 1st Over-40. Sue Haslam followed in 40th and 1st Over-70. Bridget Macedonski who was 1st Over-55 last season, was 59th and 3rd Over-60. Lisa Kilroe made her League debut in 101st overall and 13th Over-40 The team was placed 12th of 18.
Under-11s
3 of the 4 Club Juniors competed in the Under-11 Races In the Boys race, 10-year-old Noah Kilroe was 12th overall of 28. 9-year-old Xabier Unanue made his League debut in 15th.
In the Girls race, 9-year-old Tayla Koekemoer finished up in 11th of 28 (The Under-11 Age Group does not have team results).
Boys Under-15
13-year-old Jack Marshall, the youngest of the 3 Generation, also made both his Club and League debut in the Boys Under-15 race, and when competing with mostly older runners finished up in 16th.
Under-17 Men
Reigning Under-17 Men’s League Champion Ben Guthrie, finished 2nd after a battle with the race winner,,Middlesbrough Mandale Athletic Club’s top runner Zandar Gribbon.
Senior Men
Darryl Koekemoer was 39th overall of 165 and 6th Over-40. Sheldon Kilmore was also a League debutant and finished 101st and 15th Over-50.
