North Yorkshire and South Durham Cross Country League Round 3 at Whitby

A recent record number of 14 club members, which included 5 Juniors, competed in the 3rd Round of the North Yorkshire and South Durham Cross Country League at Whitby College. After lots of recent rain and snow, the course was classed as ‘heavy going’ but all concerned were delighted  that the fixture was retained on a weekend that many sporting fixtures and local Parkruns were cancelled.

In the Men’s Under-17 Race, Ben Guthrie who is the current League Champion for this age group, notched up a win after pulling clear of the Race Leader around the halfway stage.

In the Senior Men’s race Harry Butterworth, who was the winner of this year’s Yorkshire Coast 10-Kilometre Race, returned to Cross-Country for the first time in the league in 6 years. After a battle with the reigning Senior Men’s Champion Gregory Jayasuriya, he hung on well to finish in 2nd Overall of a strong field that precluded some older Age Groups who had a separate race.

In the Senior Mens Race, the runner up Harry Butterworth was followed by Darryl Koekemoer 20th and 5th Over-40, Ekaitz Unanue 57th, Sheldon Kilroe 61st and Joanathan Sharp, who made a return to Cross-Country since his days as a Junior, was 66th of 111th overall.

For a second consecutive fixture, the Club’s Senior Women fielded a scoring team of 4 Rhona Marshall who was 4th Female overall and 1st Over-40, 21st and 5th Over-50 led Hester Butterworth 21st and 5th Over-50, Sue Haslam 37th and 1st Over-70, and Bridget Macedonski 51stand 4th Over-60.

In the Junior Races starting with a combined race for Under-11 Girls and Boys. Tayla Koekemoer who was the club’s Under-11 Girl representative, finished 16th of 29 and ahead of 7 Boys. Noah Kilroe and Xavier Unanue took on the Under-11 Boys in the race. Noah was 10th and Xavier 14th of 22 overall, 13-year-old Jack Marshall competed in the Under-15 Race and was 15th overall
